Understanding Your Vision

If you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism, the refractive procedures that Dr. Sebrow offers can reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

REFRACTIVE ERRORS

To better understand how the eye functions we have prepared a short overview of vision problems resulting from refractive errors.

MYOPIA
Myopia or nearsightedness occurs when light rays are bent excessively so that objects are brought to focus before they reach the retina. While myopic patients usually see well at near, their distance vision is compromised.

HYPEROPIA
Hyperopia or farsightedness occurs when light rays are not bent enough to focus on the object on the retina. Hyperopic patients must exert their eyes in order to bring both distant and and near objects into focus.

ASTIGMATISM
Astigmatism occurs when light rays are focused at more than one point on the retina. This is due to the cornea not being uniformly round. Imagine the shape of a basketball compared to that of football.

PRESBYOPIA
As we bring distant objects closer to us, the eye maintains focus by changing the shape of the lens. Presbyopia occurs when the lens of the eye is no longer able to change shape, generally around the age of forty.
